There are no specific regulations on academic guidance in the legislation concerning adult education. The language providers often organize a form of guidance, for example in identifying the training needs and learning needs or to assess the best follow-up training.

There are no specific regulations on psychological counselling in the legislation concerning adult education. This does not mean that it does not happen in institutions. Schools and institutions are autonomous in deciding this.

The government has taken steps to encourage adults to follow qualified education also during their career. For more information, see chapter 8.4: Provision targeting the transition to the labour market. This is included in the government letter on lifelong learning.
In secondary education attention is paid to career orientation - and guidance (LOB – Loopbaanoriëntatie – en begeleiding).
In the renewed VMBO extra attention will be paid to the transition from VMBO to MBO. Still too many pupils fall out when they make this transition. Career orientation and guidance will be a mandatory part of the new vocational curriculum (with the exception of VMBO-tl). So that students learn to make conscious choices and thus be better prepared for further education. The new set-up of VMBO will start in the school year 2016/2017.
