TESE - Thesaurus for Education Systems in Europe – 2009 Edition
TESE is a multilingual controlled vocabulary - a carefully selected list of words - on education systems in Europe. It is designed by the Eurydice network to organize its publications by subject and to make them easier to retrieve in a search. This second, 2009 edition of TESE is a collaborative effort of information and education specialists and takes into account the most recent developments in education systems and policies in Europe.
TESE is available in 15 languages: Czech, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish and Turkish. The Latvian version is currently under preparation.
Browse TESE
In the drop-down menu to the left, select your preferred TESE language version and then either of two browsing modes:
Search for a descriptor: type in a single word. Truncation (*) can be used to broaden searches. Terms (descriptors and non-descriptors) that match your query will be displayed (rotated display).
Navigate the hierarchy: click on this option to browse for terms by subject category (microthesauri).
When browsing in TESE:
Click on a descriptor to view the entire display (scope note or definition, non-descriptors, language equivalents), its semantic environment (related, broader and narrower terms) and, where appropriate, the number of resources indexed using this descriptor.
Click on a microthesaurus code (e.g.: MT 01) to view its hierarchy.
You may switch to another language version of TESE at any time. For further information, click on Frequently Asked Questions.
You can download TESE in three formats (pdf, xml and csv) and three displays (systematic, rotated and alphabetic). A preface, full TESE presentation, statistics, acknowledgements and a list of 2009 descriptor changes in all 15 TESE language versions are also available for download left-hand menu.
This second edition of TESE builds on the 2006 edition. You can find details on the update in the Downloads section to the left. Certain descriptors of the first edition have been taken from the former European Education Thesaurus (TEE) as specified in the list below:
