European education thesaurus (EET)
1998 Edition

The European Education Thesaurus (EET) is a joint product of the European Commission and the Council of Europe.

The EET is an information resource language intended to facilitate the recording of and search for information in databases on education in Europe. It consists of a set of terms linked to one another by hierarchical or associative relationships and is the common language of those who use and administer national and international information resource systems in and beyond the European Union.

This fourth and final edition covers the 11 official languages of the European Union at the time it was published. Other language versions of the EET have been developed independently in the meantime, in Albanian, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Slovene and Turkish.

After the Council of Europe withdrew from this project, the European Commission asked the Eurydice Network to develop a new thesaurus that would take account of the most recent developments in the field of education and be devoted to education policies and systems in Europe: TESE - Thesaurus for Education Systems in Europe. Certain descriptors have been derived from the EET, and new ones have been added. For further information on this subject, please see the following lists:
           • list of EET descriptors not included in TESE: English - French - German
           • liste des descripteurs de TESE qui ne figuraient pas dans le TEE: English - French - German

Eurydice is responsible for ensuring that the EET can be accessed as widely as possible via its website. Reproduction of these documents is authorised on condition that this is not for commercial purposes and provided that their source is quoted.

For further information on the EET, please do not hesitate to contact the Eurydice European Unit (info@eurydice.org).
